Budapest airport: terminals, passenger services and airlines

Budapest airport in Hungary (IATA code: BUD) -also known as Ferenc Liszt International airport- is located just 16 kilometres from the city centre and serves as main hub for the national low-cost carrier Wizz Air and operational base for Ryanair in this country. Being the largest airport in Hungary and prompted by recent remodelling works, a high number of flights to European destinations are handled from its terminals on a daily basis, while it must be said that travellers can also fly to some African, Asian and North American cities from BUD ever since international airlines incorporated it as a stopover or final point into their routes (see the “flights to Budapest” section).

Travelling from Budapest airport to the city centre

In order to go from the airport to Budapest centre, many arriving passengers opt for hiring a vehicle from one of the car rental offices on the public zone: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz or Sixt. Public bus lines 100E and 200E can take you from the arrivals area of BUD to Deák Ferencter and Kobánya-Kispest metro station respectively; allow 30 minutes approximately for this journey. Likewise, trains departing from the railway station opposite the old Terminal 1 and from Ferihegy train station (few bus stops from terminals 2A and 2B if we take line 200E) connect Budapest airport to the city in about 25 minutes. Should you prefer a more personalised transfer service, several shuttle companies have their information desks at the arrivals area and offer to comfortably transport you and your bags to your hotel in Budapest or, in some cases, to destinations within Hungary and the neighbouring territories.

Terminals of Budapest airport

There are three main areas currently in use at Budapest International airport in Hungary: terminal 2A, terminal 2B and the SkyCourt.

Terminal 2A accommodates the check-in counters for all SkyTeam and StarAlliance carriers, so you must go to this terminal if you are flying with a member airline. However, take into account that only the flights operated within the Schengen zone have their designated boarding gate in the departures zone of this terminal. In case you are travelling to a non-Schengen airport, transferring to terminal 2B is required; this can be done quickly and on foot by simply going through the SkyCourt building.

Terminal 2B, on the contrary, has all the check-in desks for the OneWorld Alliance airlines and Wizz Air, but only departures towards non-Schengen destinations are operated from it. Thus, bear in mind that you may need to go here first for checking in, then walk to terminal 2A to board your plane, for which purpose you will go across the SkyCourt.

The SkyCourt is a transit area where passengers can relax, shop and dine while waiting to board their plane at BUD. It consists of a five-storey building connecting the two other terminals after security, home to the finest cafés, restaurants, fashion outlets and airport lounges in Budapest airport, including the Menzies one, the Platinum and the Mastercard lounge, which was the first of the brand to be inaugurated in Europe. The most popular shops and eateries at the SkyCourt are Desigual, Guess, Calvin Klein, Hard Rock Shop, Heinemann Duty Free, Hugo Boss, Inglot, Swarovski, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria’s Secret, Burger King, Café Ritazza, Camden Food, Costa Coffee, Dr. Juice, KFC, Negroni and O’Learys to mention but a few.

Free WiFi in Budapest airport, Hungary

Passengers going through its terminals can enjoy Budapest airport’s WiFi free of charge; however, note that this service is provided only for two hours after completing the registration process on your mobile device.

Lockers to leave your luggage in Budapest International airport

Whether you are carrying excess baggage that you don’t want to get rid of or you need to leave some of your belongings at the airport until you return from a short trip, the luggage storage room in Budapest airport seems like a convenient an affordable option to keep your valuables in a safe place. It stays open around the clock every day and hourly fees start from 2 euros.
