Formerly known as Princesa Lisboa Centro and recently renamed as Stay Hotel Lisboa Centro Saldanha, this hotel in central Lisbon is a member of the Stayhotels Portuguese hospitality chain situated at number 130 of Rua Gomes Freire in Lisboa. Its convenient location enables guests to visit the most emblematic landmarks of the city after a short bus ride, a nice stroll or a quick journey on Lisbon subway trains, while it also guarantees a good night’s sleep since, unlike other accommodation options in the lively Baixa neighbourhood, this one has much quieter surroundings.
The fastest and most inexpensive way to transfer to this hotel in Lisbon is by metro trains departing from Humberto Delgado airport (LIS), where you are allowed to keep your luggage with you. The Lisboa metro system is simple and services run rather frequently. The concourse of the Red Line of Lisbon underground is clearly signposted right before you exit the arrivals hall of Terminal 1, so go downstairs, buy your tickets from the self-service machine and hop on the next train headed towards São Sebastião. Get off at the Saldanha station and change to the Yellow Line towards Picoas: this is as close as you will be to the Princesa hotel main entrance, 5 minutes away on foot.
Checking in at the Stay Hotel in central Lisbon
A nice and efficient member of the staff welcomed us upon arrival, processed the payment and gave us all the information we needed, even providing directions to get around the city, which proved really helpful during our trip. The front-desk area is rather small, but we appreciated the fact that it featured large mirrors on the wall.
Our hotel room in Lisboa
Our twin room at this centrally located hotel in Lisbon was on the third floor, offered views to the city streets and was surprisingly ample: there was enough space to walk as well as to open and handle our suitcases. It had both a window and a balcony. Complimentary bottled water, tea bags and facilities to prepare hot drinks awaited us on the desk, and we could also enjoy a spacious wardrobe, a full-length mirror, a flat-screen TV and an ensuite bathroom with tub/shower, soap, shower gel and clean towels changed daily.
Breakfast at the Stay Hotel Lisboa Centro Saldanha in Portugal
Each morning, guests of the Stay Hotel Lisboa Centro Saldanha in Lisbon are offered a continental buffet breakfast served in a cosy dining area of the ground floor. It may be already included in the nightly rate when you make your reservation or paid for separately. It consists of a choice of cereal, milk, coffee, hot chocolate, the typical “pasteis de nata” and other pastries, yogurt, cheese and cold meats. There were loaves and slices of bread and a variety of pieces of fruit, and both a toaster and a squeezer were made available for us to use them freely. The premises were clean and the still sleepy guests could eat their first meal of the day to the beat of music videos or while watching the news on a TV screen.
Recommended accommodation in Lisboa
The overall experience was quite positive, and we would like to place emphasis on its ideal location in terms of tranquillity and public transport options. The unexpectedly large room with lots of natural lighting was a plus, which adds up to the hearty breakfast and the in-room amenities.
Their WiFi did not work on my Android phone, something that was not unusual according to the staff. This was the only disadvantage for us, but it has to be said that the staff made every effort to solve the problem and, since we did not spend much time at the hotel, this was not truly relevant.
